When a download fails: a practical checklist

Real reasons jobs fail on Grab Media—deleted posts, login walls, odd embeds—and what to try before you hit retry for the fifth time.

A failed status in the queue is not a personal rejection—it is usually the site refusing to hand over a file without your login, or the page never exposed a stable media address in the first place. I still get failure mail every week, and the same handful of causes cover most of it.

Step 1: reproduce in a clean browser

Open the URL in Chrome or Firefox with no extensions, ideally a private window where you are not signed in. If the page immediately asks for a password or shows "sign in to continue," stop. Grab Media cannot borrow your cookies. Submitting anyway wastes queue time and will fail the same way again.

If the media plays fine while logged out, copy the address bar exactly—no trailing spaces, no mobile app share wrapper if you can avoid it. Paste that into the home form and confirm the rights checkbox.

Step 2: check whether the post still exists

Creators delete uploads, platforms remove copyright strikes, and temporary festival streams vanish after the event. A link that worked last Tuesday may 404 today. Refresh the source page; look for "video unavailable" banners. There is nothing to retry on our side if the origin is gone.

Step 3: distinguish page URL from file URL

Some hosts embed a player that loads the real file from a different domain minutes later. Others only ship bytes through encrypted segments our pipeline cannot reassemble without keys. Read direct links versus embedded players if you want the longer version. Short answer: HTML watch pages fail more often than URLs that end in .mp4 or point at a CDN bucket you control.

Step 4: size and timeout

Very long live streams or multi-gigabyte uploads sometimes exceed our processing window. Progress may creep to 60–80% and then fail. Try again during off-peak hours (late night IST works well for our server). If it fails twice at the same percentage, the source may be throttling automated requests—retrying five more times will not help.

Step 5: when to contact support

Use the contact form when the public page plays for everyone, you own the content, and failures persist after one careful retry. Include the approximate time you queued the job and whether you were logged in as a guest or registered user. Do not paste private tokens or paid course URLs with embedded credentials.

What not to do

  • Hammer Retry on every failed row—that slows the shared queue.
  • Submit the same URL from ten browser tabs to "force" priority.
  • Expect DRM-protected streams from subscription apps to work—they will not.
  • Assume failure means the tool is "broken" for that platform forever; sources change often.

Try the downloader

Paste a public URL you have rights to on the home page. Confirm the rights checkbox before queuing.
